A 7-year-old cat was referred with pelvic limb ataxia. Radiography and CT revealed bone resorption of the L1 vertebral arch, and myelography identified a compressive extradural lesion.

The mass was surgically removed and histopathologically diagnosed as giant cell osteosarcoma. Three years later, the recurrent tumor resection and vertebral fixation were performed. Six months later, vertebrectomy was performed to radically excise the recurrent mass and a titanium spinal cage was placed.

Atlanto-axial (AA) instability due to ligament insufficiency is a common cause of cervical spinal cord compression in toy breeds. However, in some dogs a difference in size between the atlas and the axis leads to joint incongruence that exacerbates AA subluxation and makes surgical treatment challenging.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the accuracy and safety of pin placement for lateral vertebral stabilization to the reference dorsal stabilization.

STUDY DESIGN: A randomized noninferiority trial.

SAMPLE POPULATION: Twenty Greyhound cadaveric lumbar spines (L1-L6).

OBJECTIVE: To determine the influence of preoperative computed tomography (CT) versus magnetic resonance (MR) on hemilaminectomies planned to treat thoracolumbar (TL) intervertebral disc (IVD) extrusions in chondrodystrophic dogs.

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective clinical study.

SAMPLE POPULATION: Forty chondrodystrophic dogs with TL IVD extrusion and preoperative CT and MR studies.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the stability of a simulated complete L7-S1 fracture-luxation immobilized with SOP locking plate system, compared to pins and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA).

STUDY DESIGN: In vitro biomechanical study.

ANIMALS: Cadaver specimens of 18 skeletally mature large-breed dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the surgical treatment and outcome for juvenile dogs with cranial thoracic vertebral canal stenosis treated by unilateral hemilaminectomy.

STUDY DESIGN: Case series.

ANIMALS: Three large-breed brachycephalic dogs of various breeds (Dogue de Bordeaux, Australian Bulldog, Boerboel) with neurological signs consistent with a myelopathy of the third thoracic (T) to third lumbar (L) spinal cord segment.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the short-term, mid-term, and long-term results after an individualized mini-hemilaminectomy-corpectomy (iMHC) procedure for treatment of acute and chronic thoracolumbar intervertebral disc disease in non-chondrodystrophic dogs.

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study.

ANIMALS: Client-owned non-chondrodystrophic large breed dogs (n = 57).

Category: Spine

OBJECTIVE: To assess technical feasibility and mechanical properties of 3 locking plate designs (Zero-P, Zero-P VA, and Uniplate 2) for use in the canine cervical spine.

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective ex vivo study.

ANIMALS: Cadaver cervical spines from skeletally mature large breed dogs (n = 18).

OBJECTIVES: To describe postoperative computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in dogs with degenerative lumbosacral stenosis (DLSS) treated by dorsal laminectomy and partial discectomy.

METHODS: Prospective clinical case study of dogs diagnosed with and treated for DLSS. Surgical and clinical findings were described. Computed tomography and low field MRI findings pre- and postoperatively were described and graded. Clinical, CT and MRI examinations were performed four to 18 months after surgery.
