Fracture Fixation and Implants

OBJECTIVE:  To report clinical experiences with the tibial plateau levelling osteotomy (TPLO) procedure in small breed dogs with cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) disease using specific, conically coupled, 1.9/2.5 mm locking plates and evaluating short-term complications and outcome.

A nine-year-old English bulldog presented with an acute history of dyspnoea, tachycardia and discomfort localising to the ventral thorax following a fall down the stairs that morning. After the dog was stabilised, thoracic radiographs revealed a luxation of the third and fourth sternebrae with dorsal displacement of the caudal segment.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the in vitro biomechanical properties of four different configurations of acrylic external skeletal fixator constructs.

CASE REPORTS: Sacral fracture repair was accomplished in a cat and five dogs using a composite technique consisting of pins and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA).

In three of the cases, planned traditional iliosacral lag screw fixation was either abandoned or considered inadequate and in the other three, fracture configuration demanded an alternate repair method. All six cases healed uneventfully with no surgery-associated complications.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the biomechanical properties of single 3.5 mm broad dynamic compression plate (DCP) and double 3.5 mm String-of-Pearls (SOP) plate constructs in single-cycle bending and torsion. We hypothesized that the double SOP construct would outperform the broad DCP in both bending and torsional testing.

METHODS: Broad DCP plates and double 3.5 mm SOP plates were secured to a previously validated bone model in an effort to simulate bridging osteosynthesis. Constructs were tested in both four-point bending and torsional testing.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether administration of postoperative oral antimicrobial drugs has a beneficial effect on preventing surgical site infections (SSI) in clean orthopedic surgery involving stainless steel plating systems.

STUDY DESIGN: Randomized prospective clinical study.

ANIMALS:Dogs (n = 97).

Two cats that developed bilateral calcaneal stress fractures are reported. One cat developed lameness associated with incomplete fractures at the base of both calcanei, both of which progressed to acute, complete fractures 2 months later. The second cat presented with acute complete calcaneal fracture, with evidence of remodelling of the contralateral calcaneus, which subsequently fractured two years later.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether extending prophylactic antimicrobial administration into the postoperative period would decrease the surgical site infection (SSI) rate in clean canine orthopedic surgery associated with a metal implant.

STUDY DESIGN: Randomized prospective clinical study.

SAMPLE POPULATION: Consecutive procedures (n = 400) on dogs that had clean orthopedic surgery using a metal implant.

OBJECTIVE:  To describe a surgical technique using a regenerative approach and internal fixation for immediate reconstruction of critical size bone defects after segmental mandibulectomy in dogs.

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective case series.

ANIMALS: Dogs (n = 4) that had reconstruction after segmental mandibulectomy for treatment of malignant or benign tumors.

Circular external fixators are commonly used to surgically treat a variety of orthopedic conditions. However, distortion artifact may mislead the radiographic interpreter as to the true anatomic location of the transfixing wires and either negatively impact patient healing or lead to unnecessary procedures. Distortion is due to unequal magnification of different parts of an object. The purpose of this study was to assess distortion of three circular external fixator apparatuses with the transfixing wires at 30, 60, and 90°.
